The California King Snake is one of the prettiest snakes found in the Bay area.  Black rings, about a half an inch wide, alternate with white rings of a similar width, to create a bold banded pattern. Sometimes the bands may be chocolate brown and yellow, and occasional specimens may be striped.

Kingsnake babies hatch out at eight to ten inches long and may reach four to six feet as adults.  They are powerful constrictors that prey on smaller reptiles as well as rodents, amphibians, bird and reptile eggs.

Kingsnakes are probably most appreciated for the fact that they readily attack rattlesnakes and are immune to their venom.  Rattlesnakes seem to sense this and usually just attempt hide their head under a coil as they are quickly overpowered and consumed by their mortal enemy.
California king snakes are one of the most commonly bred snakes in the pet trade along with corn snakes and can produce an amazing number of possible color and pattern variations.  They are happy to eat mice in captivity and soon give up their defensive strategy of musking when picked up.  They should never be housed with other smaller snakes though.
